Pacific Student Transition Program at Zukeran Elementary
Okinawa, Japan – The Pacific Student Transition Program at Zukeran Elementary is designed to provide a welcoming and supportive environment for students in grades K–5 as they adjust to a new school community. Through peer mentorship, structured activities, and collaboration with support staff, the program fosters a strong sense of belonging, builds resilience, and encourages positive peer relationships.
"Dr. Jackson has taken the Pacific Transition Program to a whole new level by including our kindergarten, first, and second grade students,” said Principal Elise Rosch. “It is a wonderful partnership between our older students and younger students, and a great community support for our mobile military-connected families, even those with young children."
As part of our commitment to supporting new students, Zukeran Elementary proudly implements two key components of the program:
Meet & Greeters (Grades 4–5)
Selected students in grades 4 and 5 serve as Meet & Greeters, welcoming new students upon arrival and contributing to school-wide wellness through their participation in the morning broadcast program. These student ambassadors play a vital role in supporting transitions by offering friendly introductions, assisting with orientation, and sharing strategies and coping skills to help all students adjust to their new environment with confidence and ease.
Toucan Trailblazers (Grades K–5)
Each classroom includes approximately three Toucan Trailblazers – student leaders trained to support new classmates. Trailblazers meet new students in the front office and serve as buddies throughout the school day. Their responsibilities include:
- Introducing daily routines
- Escorting students to specials
- Sitting with them at lunch
- Playing together at recess
- Helping them build friendships
These initiatives are designed to cultivate a positive, and caring school climate where every student feels valued and connected from the moment they arrive.
