Smiles in the Spotlight
Celebrating National Children’s Dental Health Month
In recognition of National Children’s Dental Health Month, Zukeran elementary school was proud to welcome sailors and civilian dental professionals from Okinawa’s 3rd Dental Battalion for a hands-on, age-appropriate learning experience focused on oral health. Students from Pre-K through fifth grade engaged in interactive lessons that demonstrated proper brushing and flossing techniques, the importance of regular dental checkups, and everyday habits that help prevent cavities and gum disease. Through models, visuals, and lively discussion, students learned that caring for their teeth is an essential part of caring for their overall health.
This engaging visit supports national health education priorities by reinforcing lifelong healthy behaviors at an early age. The lessons aligned with the National Health Education Standards (NHES), particularly by helping students understand health concepts, practice health-enhancing behaviors, and recognize the connection between daily choices and long-term well-being. By learning why oral hygiene matters—and how to do it correctly—students gained practical skills they can apply immediately at home and school.
Strong partnerships like this one—between schools, military medical professionals, and families—play a vital role in supporting the whole child. In Mrs. Castro’s Pre‑K class, students especially benefited from the hands‑on learning and warm, friendly interactions with the visiting dental professionals. This early, positive exposure helps reduce anxiety about going to the dentist by making dental care feel familiar, safe, and even fun. We are grateful to our own Nurse Tara Taylor and the sailors and civilians of Okinawa’s 3rd Dental Battalion for investing their time and expertise in our students and helping keep our school community smiling bright.
