OKINAWA, Japan – In celebration of the Month of the Military Child, Zukeran Elementary hosted a memorable “Purple Ball” that brought students, families, and the school community together for an evening of elegance, gratitude, and connection.

Families were treated like royalty from the moment they arrived. The school auditorium was transformed into a stunning ballroom, where students from the Kubasaki High School drama department—dressed in Victorian-era costumes—welcomed guests as members of the royal court. Kubasaki National Honor Society (NHS) students escorted each family to their personalized tables, creating a warm and intentional experience.

As families settled in, the Kubasaki Strings Quartet provided live classical music, setting a refined tone. The evening began with a moving presentation of the colors by Kubasaki JROTC cadets, followed by a powerful solo performance of the American anthem by Zukeran music teacher and lead event coordinator Ms. Jessie Saunders.

The program featured meaningful moments that honored military families. Student Addison Wray delivered a heartfelt poetry reading, and Kubasaki drama students performed a reading of a classic tale. Throughout the evening, guests enjoyed refreshments hand-passed by NHS members while participating in family traditions, including father-daughter and mother-son dances. A special cake was donated by MCI Pacific Sgt. Elijah Hart and PFC Borda Kaylin.

Master of Ceremonies Mrs. Chi Anne McGrew, information specialist, kept the energy high, guiding the audience through the evening’s events, including a lively dance competition. As the night continued, the dance floor opened for all families to enjoy modern music together, creating joyful memories and strengthening connections.

Families also took advantage of photo opportunities, capturing moments from a night dedicated to celebrating their unique experiences and resilience.

This event was made possible through a strong partnership between Zukeran Elementary and Kubasaki High School. Collaboration among the drama department, JROTC color guard, National Honor Society, string ensemble, and supporting staff showcased the power of community. Their professionalism and dedication were evident in every detail.

Lead Event Coordinator Ms. Jessie Saunders shared, “The collaboration and support across the school community made a tremendous impact… the partnership between the schools truly shined throughout the evening.”

Jenny Swan emphasized the importance of opportunities like this, stating, “Events like the Purple Ball give military families something incredibly valuable time together.”

The Purple Ball was more than an event; it was a celebration of military children and their families, honoring their strength, sacrifice, and the vibrant community that supports them.
