Students at Zukeran Elementary School had the incredible opportunity to partner with the firefighters of Camp Foster in Okinawa, Japan for Fire Safety Week—a hands-on learning experience that taught students essential skills to keep themselves and their families safe.

Firefighters met with each grade level to lead engaging sessions on fire safety at home, emphasizing the importance of having a family escape plan and practicing it regularly. Students learned how to identify safe exits, what to do if smoke is present, and why it’s crucial to stay low and move quickly during an emergency. In addition to home safety, the firefighters shared valuable tips about electronic chargers and rechargeable batteries, explaining how improper use can lead to dangerous situations.

Firefighters also hosted a lively Q&A session where students asked thoughtful questions about fire prevention and emergency response, followed by the fire safety mascot, Sparky! The highlight was a simulated house fire experience where students had to put learning to practice. Firefighters praised our students for their curiosity and commitment to safety.

We are grateful to our local fire department for their time, expertise, and dedication to keeping our community safe. Families are encouraged to continue the conversation at home by reviewing escape routes and checking smoke detectors regularly.

Safety starts with knowledge—and thanks to Fire Safety Week, our students are better prepared to protect themselves and others!
