OKINAWA, JAPAN – Zukeran Elementary School recently wrapped up an exciting and engaging Read Across America Week, celebrating the theme "Literacy Sparks Innovation." This special week, aligned with our literacy curriculum Unit 5: Innovation and Technology, ignited students' enthusiasm for reading and showcased the strong collaboration between educators, families, and the military community.
Each morning began with book trailers produced by students in the school leadership club. These videos were shown during the student-led, live-recorded announcements, setting an inspiring tone for the day's literacy activities.
The festivities began on Friday, February 28th, with student innovation project displays, highlighting the creativity and problem-solving skills of young learners. These projects, carefully arranged in the common area, featured titles, standards, and rubrics to showcase students' achievements. Examples included first graders’ robot writing, where they described the capabilities of their designed robots; second graders’ digital innovator timelines; third graders’ inventor biography posters and student-created inventions; fourth graders’ green technology lap books and AI-generated images for opinion writing; and fifth graders’ environmental impact dioramas.
Monday, March 3, was "Motivated Monday: Dream Big," where students and staff wore pajamas to school, creating a cozy atmosphere perfect for storytelling. Parent and military guest readers visited classrooms during the first 20 minutes of literacy lessons, reading from books thoughtfully selected by the School Information Specialist.
The excitement continued with "Twin Tuesday: Team Up for Success," where students dressed alike with their friends, symbolizing the importance of teamwork and collaboration in learning.
On "Wonderful Wednesday: Dress to Impress," VIP readers from the District Office visited nearly every classroom, engaging students with captivating read-alouds and discussions about the power of books and innovation.
Thursday, March 6, was "True to You Thursday: Wild & Wacky Hair Day," featuring a performance coordinated by the Information Specialist Ms. Mignon Claybourne and the Kubasaki High School drama club. The highlight of the day was Family Literacy Night, where families participated in literacy escape rooms, games, and activities designed to spark curiosity and critical thinking. Thanks to the support of the Educational Technologist, Mr. Steven Dutcher, the escape rooms were interactive and innovative, providing students and parents with an immersive reading experience.
The week concluded with "Futuristic Friday: Glow for Innovation," where students dressed in neon and bright colors to celebrate the connection between literacy and future possibilities. Guest readers once again visited classrooms, ensuring the week ended on a high note.
Throughout the week, collaboration was key to the success of Read Across America. The Art Teacher, Ms. Michelle Ruksc, created a visually stunning backdrop that reflected the theme, while collaboration among classroom teachers, the Literacy Support Specialists (Oona Delaney and Ms. Neissa St. Jean), and other staff members ensured the success of the event. The dedication of volunteers, staff members, and guest readers made every event memorable.
Zukeran Elementary's Read Across America Week was a testament to the power of reading and community engagement. Family Literacy Night was a shining example of how reading strengthens bonds and fosters a lifelong love of books. The events throughout the week demonstrated that when literacy and innovation intersect, the possibilities for learning are endless. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed to making this week a resounding success!
