About Our School

Zukeran Elementary School

Sukiran Elementary School opened Kishaba housing area on Camp Sukiran in Okinawa in 1954. Camp Sukiran was later renamed to Camp Foster, and Sukiran Elementary School was renamed to the current Zukeran to align with the Japanese spelling.

Zukeran Elementary is a PK through fifth grade school serving about 430 students and their families. Zukeran is accredited by Cognia, the accreditation organization for all DoDEA schools. The Pacific South District was last visited in 2022. We are part of the Department of Defense Education Agency (DoDEA) which provides education to overseas schools on military bases world-wide and some stateside schools. Please visit the DoDEA website for all information regarding DoDEA standards, curriculum, and diverse school programs that are in line with our DoDEA Mission and Blueprint for Continuous Improvement.

At Zukeran Elementary we believe in helping each child become a life-long learner and that the academic, social-emotional, and character development of all students are paramount. We also believe that students should be celebrated for their achievements. We work with all students on 21st century skills as we want them to be productive problem-solver, communicators, and collaborators.

The success of Zukeran Elementary School is evidence of our strong team of educators and staff, outstanding support from parents and community members, an engaged Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), common expectations that every student be responsible, be safe, be kind, and be respectful.

On 29 August 2018, Zukeran Elementary opened its 21st Century facility directly across the street from the former post-WWII-era campus. It is a two-story facility with an expansive Commons area used for lunch and other large group gatherings, six grade-level instructional neighborhoods, separate art and music rooms, a gymnasium with a wood floor, and a dual purpose stage which opens to the Commons and a performance room. Along with its unique architectural features, the school is equipped with the technological features necessary to facilitate 21st Century teaching and learning.
