Zones of Regulation
An initiative at Zukeran Elementary School is teaching students how to self-regulate
their emotions -- and the data shows it's making an impact, with more students coming to
school ready to learn.
Zones of Regulation gives students words to express how they feel, and tools to help them move into a zone that is conducive to learning. Every morning, students identify which "zone" they are in via digital form on their teacher's interactive flat panel, and the responses are monitored by the counseling staff to ensure students receive additional support when needed.
As a school community, Zukeran Elementary shares a common language through which they discuss their feelings and how feelings might impact their ability to focus and learn in the classroom.
Green means you are feeling happy, calm, and ready to learn. Blue means you might be tired, sick or sad. Yellow means you're feeling excited, silly, frustrated
or worried. Red means you're feeling mad, terrified, and out of control.
During the second semester of the 22-23 school year, Zukeran students identifying in the "red" zone fell to one percent, with 75 percent of students identifying in the "green" zone.
